Endoscopy & Colonoscopy

Many patients who have abdominal pain, or discomfort which from the clinical history may seem to your doctor to be related to the stomach, intestine or bowel.  They may then refer you to a surgeon to have further investigations.

In order to ascertain where your pain is originating, it may be necessary to look inside the stomach (endoscopy) or bowel (colonoscopy). These investigations allow the surgeon to examine the inside of your body and to take small samples of tissue for examination under the microscope.

The use of a small flexible telescope equipped with a camera and bright light allows the surgeon to look directly into intestine to diagnose diseases. When this is performed in the gullet, stomach and duodenum, it is referred to as "Endoscopy" or "Gastroscopy" and when it is used to study the bowel and colon it is referred to as "Colonoscopy" or "Flexible Sigmoidoscopy" depending on the part of the bowel that is being studied.

The procedure is usually performed as a day case/ambulatory procedure. We prefer to use light sedation for all procedures (unless patients request otherwise) which we have found to be more acceptable for patients. Endoscopy usually takes less than 10 minutes to complete however Colonoscopy can take a little longer.
